Share the Joy to make them smile…

Just as a single candle can light thousand candles without diminishing its glow, happiness can be shared without bounds. Seeing the smiles that blossom on the faces with whom we share our joy, in return multiplies the happiness we have, which is one of the best gifts one can get in this life. What then, would be a better gift to treat yourself to celebrate your birthday, than sharing the joy of your special day with those who long to have smiles on their faces?

It was this thought that drove us, the Rotaract Club of Alumni of University of Moratuwa to initiate the project “Share the Joy”. This is a project that invites the club members that celebrate birthdays in a given quarter of the year, to get together and organize a fun filled evening with a group of individuals with whom sharing our joy is worthwhile. As the first phase of this project, our members who celebrated their birthdays in the months of July, August and September organized an evening to share their joy with the children of Vajira Sri Children’s Development Center in Kotte. We were also privileged to have the company of Rotaractors from the Rotaract Club of Faculty of Management and Finance, University of Colombo on this occasion, which was held on the 22nd of October in 2017.

With excited hearts and hands full of snacks, goodies and toys, the Rotaractors reached  Vajira Sri Children’s Development Center around 3 pm on that day. As we entered the premises, the sight which greeted us was the eager faces of the about 25 small children who were waiting to have their evening tea with their guests for the day. This itself was a reward for us, and it was evident that the evening would surely be a day of “sharing the joy”. The tea party which started shortly afterwards, was followed by friendly chit chats, during which time Rotaractors got the chance to talk with the children and listen to their stories. Balloon games and a loud sing along followed, adding more colour to the evening. The two hours that passed, was definitely a memorable one, which we recall with joy even today.

As time flew and as it was time for us to leave, the gifts which we had in store to be given to the little ones were presented to them with warm wishes for their future. Their faces lit with a bright smile instantaneously and some even opened their gifts as soon as they received them. These special moments are those that are cherished for a lifetime, and we didn’t forget to click a few photos and selfies to capture them. These were the gifts which we took home as we bid farewell to our new little friends.

It is said that “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted”. The evening was truly a testimony to this statement, and was a motivation to look forward to the dawn of Share the Joy 2.0.
