Rotary Club of Colombo West is one of the oldest Rotary clubs in Sri Lanka which has a proud history of 58 years. The Governor’s Visit is one of the main events in the Rotary calendar and this year it was special because of the Rotary District Governor for RID 3220 – Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Rtn. Sebastian Karunakaran was from the Rotary Club of Colombo West. The Governor’s Visit for the year 2019/20 was held on the 20th of November 2019 at Galadari Hotel.
The session for Rotaractors and Interactors was started around 11.30 am in the morning and Rotaractors and Interactors from Rotaract and Interact clubs of the Rotary West family participated for this special occasion. They were given the opportunity to present their year plans to the District Governor during this event. Rtr. Karunakaran was impressed with the projects done by the young blood and he encouraged all the Rotaractors and Interactors to keep this momentum going in the future as well. He specially mentioned two special initiatives which are planned for the next year.
The first initiative was the Road Safety week planned in the beginning of the next year. The next was his effort to stop polyethene in Sri Lanka. He showed the importance of sustainable initiatives and encouraged everyone to more sustainable initiatives during the year. He also encouraged all clubs to join hands for both initiatives by the Rotary district. The session ended with the Governors’ speech and all the Rotaractors and Interactors were invited for the lunch meeting after the event.
It was the first Rotary meeting of my life and I was amused to be a part of this special meeting. The meeting was called to order by Rtr. Pavir Samarasinghe, president of the Rotary Club of Colombo West followed by the Rotary formalities. Then there was a special speech by the District Governor Rtn. Karunakaran where he clearly stated the importance of the Rotary to the Rotarians in house.
The meeting ended and we had some discussions with the Rotarians after the meeting. We got the opportunity to take a photograph with the District Governor as well. This was another memorable day in Rotaract for me.
